What is BHB Beta-Hydroxybutyric Acid?
3-hydroxybutyrate (3-hydroxybutyrate) also known as beta-hydroxybutyrate (-hydroxybutyrate) is a ketone body.It has two enantiomers, D-3-hydroxybutyric acid, chiral compound of L-3-hydroxybutyric acid.In patients in ketosis, 3-hydroxybutyrate levels are also elevated like other ketone bodies.In humans, 3-hydroxybutyrate is synthesized in the liver from acetyl coenzymes in a reaction catalyzed by 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase.During hypoglycemia, the brain can use 3-hydroxybutyrate as a source of energy.In patients with diabetes or alcoholic ketoacidosis, blood ketone levels are elevated, which can be indicated by urine or blood ketone level testing.In both types of ketoacidosis, the ratio of 3-hydroxybutyrate to oxaloacetate can be increased, resulting in a stall in the Krebs cycle, shifting towards ketone body production.
